The Biography of Kona Scuba ledgend
James Robinson

Well, here's a brief synopsis of "Jimbo" (as his many friends call him). Jim has been creative since Day One, primarily involved with Ocean Activities, after entering this world by birth in Honolulu, Hawaii (the heart of the Pacific) over 60 years ago.

Jim's credentials in business date back to the 1950's when he established his mechanical and management skills with Sequoia Stages, in the San Francisco area. He learned to love the outdoors and his scuba diving there and subsequently became the General Operations Manager at their business (known as Eastshore Lines) which included a total of 20 Tour Busses!

In the late 1960's Jim settled in Hawaii and became Owner/Manager of Hawaiian Divers and Dancing Dolphins which entailed many water sports activities, including retail, repair servicing, catering, classes in skin diving and scuba diving, charter fishing and deep-sea fishing along the Kona Coast. With his experience in touring he became General Manager of the Hawaiian Scenic Tours company in 1970 - and began a rise in that industry that meant transfers back to the Mainland (but he was soon to return to his beloved Hawaii and saw over operations on Maui and Oahu for Hawaiian Discover Tours, Maui Island Tours, and Rainbow Tours).

In 1984 Jim decided he wanted "his own business'" and opened Kona Coast Divers in Kailua-Kona. He operated that exquisite business until relinquishing his majority share of this successful dive shop in 1999 (fifteen years of doing what he loves most, enjoying the sea, above and below the surface).

Since then he's been "semi-retired'"- officially: doing what he wants, when he wants, with no strings attached. Last year he assisted with Midway Phoenix in their operation on Midway Atoll in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands as relief captain on their dive and fishing boats in that pristine ocean destination.

He assists Live/Dive Pacific (with their Kona Aggressor live-aboard) maintaining their tanks, regulators, and other dive equipment, as well as acting as First Mate and Chef when required. The knowledge Jim brings to diving has been written about in magazines from "New Zealand Diver" to "National Geographic". (Take a look at the December 1995 "National Geographic" article on Manta Rays where Jim is mentioned!)

He has collaborated on pillow lava research, which helped prove the now-accepted but then revolutionary theory of plate tectonics.

The recovery and classification of antique "Hawaiian soda water" bottles is another area of expertise for Jim. The National Geographic Society used him as a source of materials and information for the book "HAWAII" published in 1970 about the Hawaiian Islands.

Every major dive magazine has done at least one article on Jim and KONA COAST DIVERS. His wide range of experience, from black coral diving to salvage, has given him insights into the diving industry that not more than a handful of people share.

Now, with his NEW Website, he's offering his experience and expertise to anyone who needs assistance in the ocean/land tour and travel field. He's the 'answer man' when it comes to doing business in Hawaii, or anywhere around the Pacific Rim. He's 'been there and done that' when it comes to diving, fishing, boating, trail hiking, environmental conservation, mechanical repair and underwater photography you name it. Jim can be your answer!
