Santo Tomas, Baja California by Ron Church

Santo Tomas, Baja California 1954

"We checked out Santo Tomas for diving but the visibility that weekend was very poor.Over the first week in June, 1955, Ron organized a diving trip to Guymas. We took two cars, one of which pulled an 18' outboard. People on the trip were your Dad, myself (Duane Buccowich), Harry Hackman, his wife, Jeff Hackman, who was just a little kid maybe 3-4 years old, and his sister who was also in that age range."

"We camped about 100' from a cantina and I remember hearing Caresa Rosa all night. We stayed a week, and early in our stay we took the outboard about 20 miles North of Guymas to a beautiful sandy beach, very isolated, with lot's of palm trees."

"In trying to get the boat back through the surf, it turned over and a few pieces of dive gear were lost. On the second attempt, they got through, and your Dad came back with a 90 pound Black Sea Bass or Grouper."

"Not knowing what to do with so much fish, we took it to the restaurant at the Playa, where they gave all of us some nice dinners! I remember having turtle steak which was delicious, a little like abalone."

"The diving around Guymas was fabulous! Great visibility, and warm water, with a varity of colorful fish. We saw huge manta rays both in the water, and leaping out of it."

"Memories of your Dad, who used to tell me DONT PANIC!"

Duane "Bucky" Buccowich 2003
