Tom Keck: EXPOSED
The California Surf Museum
is proud to announce the opening of the upcoming exhibit, "Tom Keck: EXPOSED," on Sunday, March 26, from 1:00-4:00
pm. Dozens of images from this low-key photographer’s portfolio will
be on display to the public for the first time ever.
The exhibit, continuing through 2006, will reveal a wide variety of the moods of surfing, from the surfer’s perspective to the ocean’s magical gifts — that perfect combination of place and person that captures one’s imagination so strongly. Tom Keck has been snapping these moments for over 40 years.
Tom spent his early youth in Coronado and La Jolla, hanging out with many future surfing legends, and when he took up photography in college, it seemed natural to focus in on the culture around him.
Inspired by early surf photographers Don James, LeRoy Grannis and Ron Church, Tom also taught himself the rudiments of film developing by trial and error. A decades-long career as a news photographer also helped hone his skills with an appreciation for the ‘moment.’ "I really enjoy being there on an epic day and getting good shots," said Tom. "Seeing the work, I never get tired of it. I love seeing what I’ve done and having other people stoke on it … that’s enough for me."
The exhibit is being written by author Chris Ahrens and will serve to complement the displayed photographs.
The California Surf Museum is located at 223 North Coast Highway and open
daily 10:00 am-4:00 pm. Admission is always free. Call (760) 721-6876 for more
